Declaration of Queensferry as a Fairtrade Royal Burgh
Queensferry Gazette, Friday March 7, 2008
On Saturday 1st March South Queensferry was officially declared a Fairtrade Royal Burgh having achieved the criteria set out by the Fairtrade Foundation. Queensferry is the first Royal Burgh in the country to achieve Fairtrade status. The declaration was marked by a ceremony organized by the Queensferry Fairtrade Group that took place at the Binks on the shore of the Forth on a cold and blustery morning. We were very pleased to welcome
Alejandro Chamas de los Rios
(Alex) from Bolivia and Jose da Silva from Brazil, both Brazil-nut farmers who are in Scotland for Fairtrade Fortnight. It was fantastic hearing from Alex about the difference that Fairtrade makes to him and others in producing communities. It was very inspiring to be able to meet these producers and make the connection between them and us as consumers personal. They were each able to take a little memento of Queensferry home with them in the shape of a souvenir mug and a picture of the Forth Rail Bridge, presented to them at the ceremony.
We were also very pleased to welcome Shirley-Anne Somerville, Lothian MSP, who gave us some words of encouragement and handed the Certificate from the Fairtrade Foundation to Keith Giblett, Vice-Convenor of the Community Council who received it on behalf of the whole community.
The event was well attended by local retailers, community groups, businesses and consumers who have made the award possible through their commitment to sell or buy Fairtrade products.
After the ceremony, teas and coffees were served in the Priory Church where people were also able to buy a wide variety of Fairtrade products from a stall.
In the evening many of the same people plus others continued the celebrations at a Fairtrade Folk event and were entertained by a number of different groups and duos who played a variety of music. Several different Fairtrade wines and beers (kindly supplied on a ‘sale or return’ basis by Scotmid and Tesco) were offered free of charge which seemed to go down rather well!
At the end of the event people were invited to take or renew the Queensferry 2 x 2 Fairtrade Pledge - “To buy £2 worth of Fairtrade products every month for 2 years.”
